Day Of Tubes

Home again, home again lickety split.

As planned we were on the road a little after 7 this morning. The ride over (about an hour) was rough with hungry kids and a girl that was awake much earlier than she was ready. And much earlier than her parents were ready for her to be.

After getting them checked in it wasn't long before the nurse came and got us and took their temperatures and blood pressure and such. Miss Thing was quite unsure of it all and had plenty of scowls to pass around. After we were somewhat situated a nurse brought them some crayons and paper. We colored away while we waited. Miss Thing, by this point, had been awake long enough that she could decide to be pleasant. The nurse came to get her and she sat on the bed like a champ while they wheeled her away. No fighting. No screaming. Just out for a morning ride.

At this point I think The Boy took every advantage of soaking up both his parents attention without those pesky sisters hanging around. We colored and played some more until it was his turn. When it was his turn he decided he would rather walk. So the nurse wheeled his bed away, he waved at it as it went by. When she came back for him he was a bit unsure. David walked the little hallway with him but then they had to carry him back, he wasn't interested in walking anymore.

We weren't in the waiting room 10 minutes before Miss Thing was ready for us in recovery. The older she has gotten the more we've realized she is not what you would call a "morning person." Coming out of the anesthesia was like her waking up in the morning times 10. She was crying and fighting and squirming and just couldn't be satisfied with anything. I tried to hold her and get her to drink and then handed her over and her dad tried for a little while. She wouldn't be consoled. After a little while David took her for a bit of a walk. They came back not too much later. She had stopped crying and fighting. With candy in her hands. She'll do almost anything for candy.

It wasn't too much longer that The Boy was ready for us. They had told us that he had slept a little while after taking his mask off. He was one-hundred times calmer than she was. The nurse said he sat up and then said "all done." He was ready to go home. As soon as he saw me it crawled to the end of the bed into my arms started getting his shoes on and taking off his armband. When he's ready, he's ready! I was amazed at how well he did. After having done this five times now, he's got it down now I suppose. At any rate I picked him as the winner.

The doctor came and talked to us sometime in the midst of all of this crying, candy and waking up. He said that once he put the tubes in Miss Things ears there was clear drainage from both ears. He said the same about The Boy's ear as well. The eardrum that got the tube, the left ear, had completely healed over. He put in the same kind of tube, a "T" tube in hopes that it would stay put like it is supposed to. The tube in his right ear was unchanged and didn't need to be replaced.

We were done and gone within two hours of having gotten there. I feel so blessed that everything went as smoothly as it did. Afterwards we stopped to get something to eat. Each of the kids got some chocolate milk and all was well and right with the world!

What a day it has been! Not surprisingly both are acting like it has been just a typical, routine morning. As for me I'm glad we don't do this everyday!
