Proposals of the First and Second

I was proposed to twice.

Not because I said no, either.

David just likes repetition.

Which is why when he finds something he thinks is funny he repeats it 187 times.

It’s just who he is.

I’ve mentioned before how we began, or rather he began and I dragged my feet, into the marriage discussion. It was all leading up to New Years Eve. We had gone to the airport to pick up a a friend and while we waited we circled the parking lot just talking about marriage. Then we headed downtown and walked and walked and talked and talked about marriage. To be honest I can’t remember what we talked about. Our feelings I suppose.

Then, finally, at 11:20 pm he popped the question.

Before I answered I had two questions.

The first: Why couldn’t you wait until midnight?

We laughed

The second: Do you promise to make me laugh everyday?

He said yes.

So, I said yes.

In the 3652 days that we’ve been married I can’t, with a surety, say he has made me laugh all those days. But it has been awfully close. Some days if all he gets out of me is a slight chuckle he’ll still say, “see I made you laugh, my work is done for the day.”

Laughter is important to us, if you couldn’t tell.

The second proposal was a little more on the serious side. In part because he was nervous. Which of course makes me chuckle since I had already said yes. This proposal came with the ring. Perhaps that was why he was nervous.

Here’s the thing. Long ago, before I met him, I had made the opinion that I wanted nothing to do with shopping for my engagement ring. I wanted it to be from him which meant he picked it out. That’s not to say that I didn’t look at rings and decide which was my favorite. David knew none of this. But he did pick the ring out on his own, with the help of his sister, without any input from me.

When he had the ring I didn’t know he had the ring. He was acting strange and I thought he was mad at me. He was just nervous. He took me to a special place told me why it was special then brought the ring out and asked me to marry him.

I said yes, again.
