Making Memories

2013-10-04 19.06.07

This week has been homecoming week.

Each day the kids could wear different things to show their school spirit. Tuesday: blue jeans. Wednesday: wear red. Thursday: wear boots. Friday: wear lots of blue. Then at the end of the week the class that had the most participation would get to have a football helmet to display in their class. MT’s class came in second.

Thursday evening was the homecoming parade. Which resulted in about 30 minutes of waiting for a 15 minute parade. It was one of those moments where instead of shaking my head at such a waste of time I decided that we’re making memories. And memories come in all shapes and sizes.

Then of course Friday evening was the homecoming game. As we had talked about it for the past couple of days the kids were really excited. LM kept saying “football game!” the whole way to the high school. We decided to sit near the band, as we have a couple of kids who are band fans. After a little while a student came and told us that we were in the student section and “you probably don’t want to stay here since we’re going to be standing the whole time and really loud.” I first wanted to say to her, “you know I was in high school once too,” but I kept my mouth shut and we moved down to the end of the bench. Then another dude came and told us the same thing. So we moved more. I quickly learned that “we’ll be standing the whole time and really loud,” was code for “we’ll be standing the whole time and talking to each other and not watching the game, in fact about half of us will be turned around not even facing the field.” I’ll be honest, I laughed at them. I couldn’t not. I didn’t go to all the football games in high school but I did go to some. And while I have no doubt that I did a bit of socializing while there I do remember at least watching the game and pretending I knew what was going on.

The game was a bit of a shut out. We left at half time. We thought being up 56-0 was a good sign that we had the win in the bag.

Despite all the chatty teenagers our kids had a great time. I was impressed that LM sat through the whole thing, she didn’t try to escape once. The Boy could frequently be heard chanting, “blue jays! blue jays!” And MT kept reminding us that the other time had zero points!

More memories. More shapes. And more sizes.

Great memories were being made indeed! 56-0...wow! That's a rough score!
