The night before school started I carried on our little tradition from last year and made a fancy dinner for us. To celebrate the end of a wonderful summer (more on that later, I promise) and the beginning of what I hope will be a wonderful school year.
I kept things simple.
Which seems to be my theme these days.
I still wanted to choose a scripture we could focus on this school year.
The few days prior had been a bit rough at our house. I wasn’t sure I was in the right frame of mind to search out a scripture that would be fitting for us. But as so often it is the case with the Words of Christ they jumped off the page at me and I knew this is what we would all need reminded of this school year.
Just like last year, and the years before, after dinner David gave each of the children a blessing. It was a touching experience. I’m so grateful that we’ve carried on that tradition.
I had this thought today. When my siblings and I get together and talk about things we did, or things that happened, when we were growing up my mom will then ask us, “where was I??” After my children are grown I have no idea what they will remember, or what I will for that matter. So the thing is they may not remember me making fancy dinners the night before school starts but I hope they remember that I tried to make it a big deal. That I tried to help them catch the excitement about school and learning. That I tried to focus on what’s important, preparing ourselves to learn and to grow. That is my hope.
