As you can mostly undoubtedly see our walking adventure was a great success.

There are over 8,000 walkers registered. And as I stood and looked out at the vast majority of all those people I was completely overwhelmed. All of those people have been touched by Down syndrome in some way. It was absolutely remarkable.

Not only was I overwhelmed I quickly learned I was underprepared. Having never done it before there was so much I couldn’t have known without going through it on my own.

For next year, because I’ll forget next week if I don’t write this down, I’ll know to

  • Bring a canopy
  • Get a cooler sign. I loved my little signs but lets face it I made them the night before.
  • Bring a fold up table and ask everyone to bring a chair
  • Bring my own lunch for my team members
  • Create my own agenda to give out to my team
  • Find some way to take a team picture
  • Have a little “thank you” gift for my team members
  • Farm my kids out. Sounds funny but as I thought about it I realized that perhaps some of my team members would have liked to do some of the activities with my kids (it really was all about the kids after all). So somehow I need to find a way to provide time for my kids to do something with the people that came to support them. I don’t know how but I’ll make it work Tim Gunn!
  • Have everything as ready as it can be before October starts (this October pretty much kicked my can)

Even though I felt so unprepared and so overwhelmed I’m still so glad that we did this. It has been such a wonderful experience.

I’m already getting ready for next year!
