Picking My Battles

School mornings around here are quite rough. I’ve come to accept it. Not love it. Just accept it.

I expect The Boy to take 25 minutes to eat one bowl of cereal. To want a siesta after said breakfast before getting dressed (usually we’re dressed first but lately we’ve gotten out of our routine). I expect Miss Thing to wake up complaining. Complaining about being hungry. Complaining about not wanting to go to school. Complain. Complain. Complain. I expect Miss Thing to throw in her two cents worth. To fight with all her might when I’m getting her dressed (if it were up to her clothing would most definitely be optional, except for the shoes). And all of this usually happens before 8:30.

I just expect it.

But  I have to keep my sanity. Somehow. Or bad things will happen. Very bad. So I’ve learned to pick my battles.

Lately one such battle is Miss Thing and her outfits. They must be weather appropriate but other than that I let her have at it. Usually it isn’t so bad. Can a 4 year old have a bad outfit? Should I mentioned she’s been wearing her Christmas shirt since late October? All of this makes her father cringe. He would much rather her match, among other things. But I’ve come to not care. Is that bad? Although I will say I put my foot down on things like picture day and going to church on Sunday.

This is what she came up with this morning.

I figure there are worse things I could do to her than letting her go out in public like this.

Be flexible

*I have one week left of my roaring twenties. I need some more ideas for my list. Help!*

That is quite the outfit... layers are good. She can shed some of them if she gets too warm.

I have to admit, when I am at the school and see kids well groomed and dressed as such, it makes me smile HUGE...i love kids with opinions and parents that let them have them. Good job mom and nice chosing Little Girl!

That's REAL parenting for you! And sounds soooo much like my house in the morning. Except for the Ben and Emily fighting part and me going on and on about brushing hair and teeth and packing school bags a million times before they actually do it. Hrrmph! Glad I'm not alone ;)
