Channeling

In the past few months I've discovered a new love. It started small. Every so often when I was at the Wal Mart I would pass by the fabric section and look in their remnants bin and pull this or that out. It grew into a sort of obsession I couldn't go to the store without checking the bin. Then I had to start avoiding it all together. A few months ago I decided I needed to start using some of the material for something or David might start to notice the rolls and rolls of material spilling out from under our bed.

I made myself a skirt or two. Then made the girls skirts and The Boy a pair of shorts. Then made them each their own travel pillow. More skirts. Then I started adding bags to my list of things I've made. Toys, car seat cover, the list goes on and on! Now I can hardly look at something without studying it and trying to figure in my head how to do it myself. And my list of things I want to create seems to be getting longer and longer.

I call of this "Channeling my inner-Nana." My grandmother. She had an amazing gift as a seamstress. In all of this my mom and sister have passed to me some of her scraps that she couldn't through away, ribbon galore, a favorite apron pattern and I am now, thanks to my sister, even in possession of her serger. As I sit an sew my thoughts often go to her, sitting over her sewing machine. If I've sewn something together wrong and have to go back and unpick it I sit muttering, "why didn't you warn me about this one, Nana?" Other times just as I put the presser foot down I realize I have things put together wrong and I quickly make it right before sewing it up. I always thank her for those near misses.

So I wanted to share a few of my creations. A few of my "before & afters." It is great fun and I love that I have found something I love to do and can share with Nana.

I had seen a tutorial on creating a car seat cover. Then I decided she needed one, especially since her sister now has a shiny new pink car seat. Hers looked so drab next to Miss Thing's. It was quite a bugger to make! Not sure if I'll be doing this one again.

Most of their toys live on the (enclosed) front porch. Feeling somewhat guilty about this during the really hot and really cold months I have a small cabinet that houses some "inside toys." It gets well used and unfortunately one of the doors kept coming off. Tired of gluing it back together I broke the other door off and decided to make a curtain for it. I stapled it too the cabinet with a staple gun and then promptly starting searching for more projects I could do that involved a staple gun.

Part of The Boys school supplies that he needed included a towel for rest time. Granny had given me this for that purpose, hoping it word work even with a stain. I figured I'll just cover it up! You can still see the stain but I hoped this will help him in learning the letters of his name. Something that we're working hard on.
So those are just a few of my projects in a nutshell! Isn't that fun?

Did you need one more of that cute girl?? I know I did!!

Great job, I would be tearing my hair out with that car seat cover! I'm what you would call a 'lazy seamstress' I can't wrap my head around most projects! :)

Aaaah- you're making me want to blow the dust off that new sewing machine I got for Christmas last year. It's been sorely underused. That carseat cover is too cute! I may have to sweat through the tutorial. Where did you find it? Way to go!
